A Little About Rotherhithe
-
Rotherhithe has a long maritime history rooted in maritime trades. This includes being the departure point of the Mayflower when it set sail on its journey to Massachusetts in 1620 with a small group of emigrants that are now better known as the Pilgrim Fathers.
During the 1980s the docks were gradually closed and are now being replaced with modern housing and commercial facilities. However while wandering round the area the character can be seen to retain the character of its its former maritime heritage. The largest surviving dock on the south bank is Greenland Dock.
Rotherhithe is part of the SE16 postal district. Electorally, the western half is Rotherhithe ward and the eastern half Surrey Docks ward.
The district is sometimes referred to as Surrey Docks or (since the late 1980s) Surrey Quays, though the latter name tends to be used more for the southern half of the peninsula. An eastern part, which became in effect an island when the docks were in use and locks open, is called "Downtown".
